Topic: A black Art Nouveau candlestick. Davidson?

Hello!

I was just wondering if this is actually the age I think it is.  It has lots of straw marks, which lead me to believe it must be early 1900's.  It is black, but purple when the light shines through it, which I have read is quite common for black glass.

It stands 10" tall and would make the perfect Cluedo weapon!

I have seen the same ones with a collar fitted over the top with hanging black jewels attached, so must be nouveau.  I think it needs to go back to the charity shop because it's giving me the creeps now.  Black glass seems so morbid.

sorry to be a bit thick  -  what are straw marks please??     When you say "hanging black jewels", Stu  -  do you mean in the style of a 'lustre'?      'Art Nouveau' may well indicate a period (i.e.  something like 1880 to about 1918  ish), but it is more easily understood as an artistic style  -  sinuous floral forms (and semi-naked women), and a hint of the Japanese, which is probably its real origin.   Apart from Miss. Scarlet, does your candlestick have any of these characteristics.    Perhaps you shud hang on to this piece  - never know, you might find the other, and a pair of anything is always more useful   Paul S.

Hanging black jewels is as simple as I could get it first time.  Imagine a fitment going over the top, to which are attached some other pieces of black glass which are faceted, like jewels.  These would hang from the neck.

Straw marks (as I understand them) are marks which were produced in glass when it was allowed to cool ontop of straw. 

I cannot see any women, flowers, etc, but can make out what-is-to-my-mind Art Nouveau inspired decoration to the base...

I don't expect to find any use for them, whether pair of single, but would still be interested to know the maker if anyone can help.

Can we see the base please. Straw marks are an urban myth. Any marks are likely to be where the gob of glass was cut with shears, mould flaws or those arising from stresses during annealing.

Oh no, how embarrassing!  Have just been out shopping in Clifton, Bristol, and discovered a pair of the vases in a shop window... being sold as new!

OK, that's me fooled.  I will contact the local Cluedo group immediately!  Actually, it can go back to the charity shop!

Don't be embarrassed. That's an ID, and any ID is to be celebrated! If you can sneak a photograph of the new item with label, or at least find out what is on the label, then it might help someone in the future.

That's a really good idea - I will get the photo here ASAP.  It's some distance from my home, so allow a couple of weeks please.
