The Webb bowl is one of Webbs optic-moulding designs, inter war and post war production.

The mark on the amethyst bowl is the Webbs England mark for c.1950-1966 the same as this piece(bulls-eye?)so I presumed the swirl was of the same date,Keith.

I'm with John on this.  The Amber swirl bowl in your first picture is Whitefriars.  I have one in Ruby, and saw one in Sea Green at Cambridge yesterday in 'The Country Seat' display.  It's not in the catalogues, but is a variant of pattern number 8266 shown in the 1938 and 1940 catalogues.

Here's my Ruby one:

Been trawling through WF's catalogue how do you know it's a variant,a lot of posts on that site don't think it is WF's.According to 'Art Feat and Mystery'(Story of Webbs) in the 1930's they produced a range called 'Gay glass' including,in amber, 'Venetian Ripple' 'Plain' and 'Bullseye' which I presumed is the one I posted, not all Webbs is marked I believe, so am I just banging my head against a glass wall or what???Help!Keith.

Keith,

The amber one is Whitefrairs. Gay glass by Webb's is not that colour/shade of amber. See BGbtW edited by Dodsworth for Webbs 'Gay' ware.

Emmi is pretty good on her W/F's attributions, especially when it comes to giving the pattern numbers :) ;)

You are right that Webbs is not always marked though  :)

You know, it occurs to me that a book of pointers to young collectors could sell very well.....trouble is it could also encourage a lot of competitors :o >:D ;)

Stop trying to confuse yourself. Soaking up information takes a while, and depends on the individual how fast it is, but sadly it always takes time in my experience - personal and watching others!! Stop banging your head against that wall :o

Nigel
