« on: September 28, 2009, 10:33:30 PM »
hi all
we found these two lovely peices at the car boot sale at the weekend from the same person.
we are pretty sure the vase is  murano? but not sure the big bowl/ bon bon  is?
the vase is 6 inches high and weighs 439 grams. not to sure if the colour its like cranberry/pink with yellow
and clear glass. which does glow uranium.
the big bowl is 5 1/2 inch and weighs 2.1 kg/ and again the colour is like cranberry/pink/ yellow/ and clear glass.
and there are parts of this what glow with uranium. were hope we paid a good price for these two peices  :) any id on both of these would be great thanks kim & ed  :)

The vase form was made by several Murano companies. The vase reminds me of a Formia piece, but the size is smaller than the ones I've seen. Mandruzzato has made similar vases, but I would have to check on the sizes. I do agree with you that it is a Murano piece.

Can we see them both in daylight against a plain white background please. All we're getting is shades of brown. I would be a bit surprised if the bowl contained any uranium, especially as it looks as if it might be Chribska. Can we see it straight on from the side as well please

Much better, thank you.   I wouldn't like to say that either of them contained uranium. What kind of glow are you getting under a UV light?

After getting a better look at the vase's rim in the new pictures, I can say probably not Formia or Mandruzzato. The rim appears to be pulled into the peaks and pressed down in the low points, instead of being cut. I was hoping for an easy identification, but of course, it rarely works out that way with sommerso glass.  :spls:

If it's the clear glass glowing green, it is not uranium. It is the manganese used to decolorise the glass so it doesn't look coke bottle green as a result of iron impurities in the sand. Glass containing uranium is usually a yellowy green or green and will glow a very, very bright green under a UV light.

The bowl looks like it's possibly Chribska and the the vase could be either Murano or Czech. Sommerso is not a technique exclusive to Italy
