im probably completly well off and its just a "similar" type of thing but whilst at an antiques fair today i saw a metal tray with similar glass rods with metal ends as a fitted trim all the way around the tray, i believe it was made like that as the metal was fixed to the tray and firmly gripped the rods, looked very pretty and quite similar to these rods, i did ask the chap about it but he didnt know anything had bought it in a lot at auction.

Thanks for this interesting information. Given the fittings on the ends of these rods, I don't think they could have been on a tray, but you never know!

My first thought was a towel rail.....but I don't hink the fittings are quite right for that. :)
