Large abstract vase
« on: October 13, 2009, 06:34:09 PM »
First time poster, so please be gentle.  I have searched the resources here and I cant find anything similar to this lump of glass.  I would be very grateful for any information and opinions you might have the time to share with me.

I will try my best to describe the beast, but if I miss anything, please nudge me :)

The vase is 22" tall.  7" wide towards the bottom and tapering in towards the top.  It has a max depth on one side of 3" and .5" depth on the other side - a strange shape.

Colour:  Amethyst, Gold, Turqoise, Yellow to the front and clear glass to the back.

It has an etched/engraved abstract design on the front, impressions on the back and patterned impressions on one side - which I have tried to show in the photos.

Now I admit to being a complete novice in the glass field and as such I dont know if this is a worthless piece of glass blown by an innocent passerby taken hostage in a glass factory - but I love it and would love to find out where it came from.  Many thanks for reading this and taking time to reply.

ps. I hope I have linked the photos correctly!

I should add that I have checked the linked online resources posted on this forum and dont see anything remotely similar.  I have seached hundreds of google images without success.

Any comments at all gratefully recieved - even if it is Wow, how ugly is that?

No that is not ugly, but I think the fact that you got no replies so far is that no one has seen anything like it before. It combines several techniques which make it hard to place. The overall thickness and relative lumpiness combined with the polished top rim point at Poland - There are several factories who specialise in such glass (e.g. Makora, Tarnowiecz).  The design may be a reference to a famous engraved vase by Vicke Lindstrand - which depicts a woman hanging out the laundry. Other than that, no firm news I'm afraid.

yes, I do realise how busy life is - I certainly didnt mean to 'hurry' people up, just forgot to mention I had already done as much homework as my limited knowledge allowed - my apologies.

Many thanks for your reply Paul H, it is really interesting to hear your views and I will certainly take that line of enquiry.

I bought this from a local 'museum' ... it is actually an old gentleman who has been an avid collector all his life of anything and everything, who's wife insists that he 'get rid of some junk' - he hates selling anything and so his prices can be pretty high, since he really doesnt want anyone to buy anything - he just likes to chat.  His shop is soooo full of stuff that I visited 3 times before I realised there is a car inside the place, full of and covered with all sorts of collectables!

He didnt have any idea's about where the vase was made but thought it was 'probably quite new, no older than the 60's'.  I was looking for a 'lump' of something, quite large to fill a space in our house and found this, which I really fell in love with.
