Unusual 3" paperweight with snapped pontil??
« on: October 13, 2009, 10:15:47 PM »
Hi everyone i bought my first today only because it seemed reasonable value and seemed to have some age unlike the majority ive come accross, It appears to have a small re-cessed pontil to the base 3/4" diameter and measures 3" tall. It is made up of varying blues and white and is all cased around in clear glass. and weighs 650g and plenty of wear. Any ideas who/where/when please!! :rn:

Looks like the base has been stamped.  Is that the isle of Wight logo?

The weight does have a general likeness to some of the IOW ones, or similar by Alum Bay, which used an impressed base stamp.

Would be useful to see a better pic of the base, with "straight on" view and maybe dusted with talc powder to highlight any shape in the depression.

Hi there,
looks to be the flame pontil mark by ISLE OF WIGHT to me also the colouring/style looks to be standard IOW,
I think i currently have around 20 of these in different shades. It was used from 1974 to 1979 on almost every piece, then labels and flat bases where used although the flame pontil was known to be used on some items untill around 1982
all the best

The first two pictures looked very IoWish to me, and the third picture, of the base, confirms it.  Welcome to the world of paperweight collecting!

Im sure iow after looking around a little, Ive never picked p/w up before as they seem to be all over the place and i wouldnt know which are good to purchase and which are not are there any hard and fast rules with buying p/w that i should know to help with getting a good buy for my pounds... this one was £2 i that ok price...for novice collector to pay? Thanks again  :hiclp:

Im a bit of a paperweight learner too, i know a little but its definatly an area i will have to buff up on, i would say £2 is a good price for this weight, its generally what i pay for them when in good condition, its a nice colour too
all the best
