Novice in collecting carnival glass, my knowledge is very limited. I have 3 pieces that I have trawled David Doty`s site for & I am even more confused now.
This 3 footed bowl I thought could be Northwoods 3 fruits but the centre and the outside do not match any others I have seen? Am I on the right track?

PS I just found it (I think) Northwood 3 fruits with meander exterior?

My 2nd question is ... any clues on this bowl, I can`t find any info on it, is it oldish or contempory. How do u tell the difference between older glass and modern carnival glass?

Hi Mary, and welcome to the board. It's best to open new threads for each different piece. I can split out each separate query for you if you like.

I'm no carnival expert, but your first bowl looks like Northwood Three Fruits Medallion. It also looks as though the iridescence has worn a bit on the raised sections of the pattern?

Hi Cathy
I thought it best as they were all carnival glass to include them on one post, hope that was ok.

Yes there is lots of wear on the 3 fruits but I`m just a beginner so it will do until I come across a better piece and it only cost me AU$5.

Your first bowl is indeed Three Fruits Medallion by Northwood. It is marigold and is stippled (which is nice) and it has spatula feet. The exterior pattern is Meander.

The second bowl is currently a puzzle. I have encountered it twice and both of the other examples are also from Australia. It has many of the characteristics of Imperial's glass but yet it is not one of their known patterns. It could be a European pattern but again, it's not something I have so far been able to ID (perhaps someone else may be able to help).

Your third bowl is not Australian, but is in fact Imperial (USA) and the pattern is Oval & Round.

You ask how to tell new from old Carnival? It's not easy. Sometimes there is a trademark which will help, sometimes the iridescence or the specific pattern or colour will give clues, or you simply have to read, read, read and experience the joys of Carnival collecting.

Glen, that second bowl wouldn't be a new LG Wright piece? I think I've seen it identified as such once, but then, it's a geometric pattern & I might be confused; or it might have been on ebay and the seller was confused; or both. :rn:

I don't think it's an L.G. Wright piece, but wdik  ::) :P

I can tell you that it has been called "Prism & Pleats" but the maker is not known. It is found in big bowls, small bowls and even a cake plate with a metal rod / holder.

EDITED TO ADD: an interesting point to add is that the base is ground, I believe, which is not something usually seen on Classic, USA Carnival.

wdik?

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

That bowl is heavier than most other bowls of the same size that I have. The fact that they only have appeared in Australia indicates something?

Cathy, I have a question about another bowl that I bought today, should I start a new thread or just continue here?

Glen, the more I read the more confused I am getting LOL but I learnt now what stippled means so you can teach old dogs new tricks, eventually LOL
