Two 'Hollow' Weights.
« on: November 04, 2009, 06:16:48 PM »
Just had two more glass weights arrive from an auction site and would appreciate identification. The first weight, if you can call it such, is hollow and is a cobalt blue squat shape 3"1/2 diametre, the base having a snapped off pontil mark and etched 'Bristol' as you can see by the picture. A very difficult object to photograph as being a very deep dark blue it reflects a lot of background light.

The second is also a hollow squat form weight 4" in diametre and is absolutely stunning. It appears to have an Emu depicted in the top and the darker squirly design around the midriff is a chocolate brown. The vertical markings are silver. The base has a snapped off pontil and has etched on it 'G Railly' (or 'Rally') 92 W.A. I am guessing by the bird design and the signature that it originates from Western Australia. Sorry for one or two of the pics being out of focus slightly, difficult to operate camers with one hand and sorry for the big photos. Anyway, any ideas?

The second weight is by Gerry Reilly, he has his own studio out a little way south of Margret River in Western Australia. There are quite a few glass artists out that way. regards Carol

Hi

I have an identical weight to the first blue one and it is from the Bristol Blue Glass company.

Their web site is at www.bristol-glass.co.uk

Best regards

Thanks Derek. I'll have a browse of their site. I'm learning fast and all your replies and comments are invaluable for furthering my knowledge and education. Had another weight in the post this morning, a Selkirk weight, quite a large one, and on the faceted side is engraved 'Thermomax' with the Company logo above and 91 etched on the base. Have been on Thermomax's website and emailed them with an image to hopefully find out more details.

I'm going to a large local antiques fair on Saturday and will be looking out for any quirky signed weights, you can find some nice cheap ones at these.

Hi there

Good luck at the antique fair !

Re Bristol Glass - I think they have an offshoot just down the road in Bath - very simlar products and they also do hollow PW's except that the glass is an aqua blue in colour. Worth looking out for - they go well with the Bristol glass.

Their web site is at www.bathaquaglass.com

Best regards

Derek
