Kralik for $1 - at least I think it's Kralik
« on: November 07, 2009, 05:33:24 PM »
This is a $1.00 garage sale find from early September.  The size is 5 1/4" tall X roughly 5 1/2" wide.  The weight is 1 lb. 4.2 oz. and the metal frog/top weighs 6 10 of an ounce.  I am 99% certain it is Kralik given the acid etched semi-circular mark and that a vase of the same shape and type can be found on Alfredo Villanueva-Collado's site.  (See his Kralik semi-circular marks vase photo #16WG4.)  I do have some questions however:
#1)  What would be the approximate age of the vase?
#2)  Is #16WG4 a pattern identification number for Kralik, or is it just a numbered photograph?
#3)  Although we do not sell items from our collection, I am curious about the current value as our search of the Internet did not turn up any Kralik of this style or even close to it.  (Just a rough approximation would be fine - like I said, the vase is not for sale.)

Clicking on the thumbnails will enlarge the photos.  I took two shots of the base as the mark does not show up clearly.

Thanks,
Paul ADK

Paul, it looks like Kralik to me, too.

As a favor to the group, can you attach the pictures directly to the messages in the future. The Webshot page takes a long time to load and throws advertisements. I didn't look at all the pictures because it was too difficult. Thanks.

Keith I don't agree, this rose vase with grill is early to mid thirties.

Many pieces of this type have the Czechoslovakia mark on bottom, so I believe Ivo is right. I've often seen 1920s-30s as the dates for these vases.

I am very cautious. I'd like to see some serious documentary evidence that this mark was solely used by the stated glassworks, and that there is NO possibility that the mark could have been used by another glassworks. Also it has to be re-stated, any acid-etched mark bearing the word Czecho-slovakia (hyphenated) or Czechoslovakia (non-hyphenated) HAS to date later than January 1919. Masaryk, the first president of the first Republic of Czechoslovakia, only finally received confirmation, from the League of Nations, (now the UN), of the status of the republic as a sovereign state in late 1918. Therefore ANY attributed/identified, Loetz/Kralik/Lobmeyer/Harrach/Moser pieces, bearing a Czechoslovakia mark, will NOT have been produced before 1919.

Truit and Truit date similar decors to the 1930s, well worth $1!

Marcus,

Unfortunately, as you know, the records for Kralik, Rindskopf, and many others appear to have been lost or destroyed.  Empirical research, primarily based on unique shapes and decors, has indicated that the arched mark was used by Kralik, and an example of the mark has not to date, been found on a decor that can be directly attributed to another maker. Unless lost records are discovered, that is about all we will have to go on. Continuing study looks to further substantiate the position, or to uncover a piece of glass that will disprove it.

Regarding this particular piece of glass:

Although the decor of the grill is typical of earlier pieces, the glass is most definitely ca. 1930. It is also possible that the metal grill is a marriage. I can not recall seeing a piece of glass in this decor with a grill of this sort previously. It actually does not look right to me....  It is like 1900 meets 1930.

It is one of the most frequent shapes of glass found here, sadly grills are often missing because they were thrown out with flowers.

I am sorry, I know no such thing. I am aware that company records for Kralik are currently held in the Czech Republic. They are also being kept under zero access controls for one huindred years, under legislation introduced post-communism, despite the fact that the latest items in those records dates to 1943. They are unlikely to be available for scrutiny until sometime after 2090 A.D.
