Colorful Fused(?) piece? I'm not sure. What do you think?
« on: November 22, 2009, 02:58:43 AM »
Hi you all!

I have an interesting piece to ask you about. The lady who sold it to me at a local sale told me "fused glass", but I don't know. All of the examples of fused glass I've seen have more definition where the glass colors are fused together - this doesn't look fused to me at all. Maybe she's confused, or maybe I am, or both.

definite pontil mark

This is about 4" tall and 3.5" wide - and is next to weightless, it's so thin.

Fused to me is layers of flat glass merged in the oven - but this is a type of lampwork whereby shards are picked up on a marver and used as a colour contrast. It is one way of re-using broken pieces.
The colour scheme suggests reused replica glass - perhaps from Israel where there is quite an industry of imitation antiques - or perhaps from Lauscha/ Thuringia where really nice surface treatments and techniques have been tried out for many years.

I don't think it's fused glass either. It looks very much like it's blown. I haven't a clue about who would make such a piece, but I do know that I really like it. I have a piece that's also very light. It seems to have the same foil as the base decoration and then a thicker almost enamel looking surface decoration. I posted its picture on here, although I can't find the thread right now. If I remember correctly, Ivo thought it was Eastern European. I'll post an upside down picture to see if you think there are any similarities.

David

PS I'd do a swap in a minute. And who should post as I was writing this but....
My glass collection is at https://picasaweb.google.com/lasilove

That is a nice piece, and includes Murrhine - so perhaps Italy is at issue!?

Ivo and David, thank you for giving me a couple of new directions in which to research this piece.

David, your vase is neat looking with the murrhine inclusions and ribbons, I'd think Italy on that one.
