pate de verre
« on: December 08, 2009, 09:16:40 PM »
does anyone know of any makers that would have marked their glass "pate de verre" new or old?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300373101279&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.com%3A80%2F%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp3907.m38.l1313%26_nkw%3D300373101279%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1

I guess 1 slight hand is written on it in pencil?

I've always wanted to have an example of this but I am unsure if I've paid way too much for this or not. She's given me a chance to bow out of this if I wanted ( she is of the opinion this is old and I think she's unhappy with the outcome) I am thinking this probably is on the newer side than the older side.

but i have so little experience wiht this type of glass (Zero) that I wouldn't even know if it was a DIY ( I think this is better than that though) anyway opinions? quickly hopefully :)

While it is a nice piece of glass I doubt it is actually pâte-de-verre - it is rather satinated pressed glass. Anyone going through the onerous process of making the mould, packing it with colour powdered glass and baking it in the oven would not be happy with this level of washed out detail. Besides, the inscription makes no sense at all. Either you sign using your own or the company name, or you leave it blank and save yourself some trouble.

I think backing out was a good idea. The colour looks sprayed on to me

yes one of these days I'll learn not to do searches first thing in the morning before coffee and then recklessly act on them. I consider this a close shave :)

ahem - Daum makes the most amazing PdV at most amazing prices. My all time favourite is the breathtaking "Jonquille" vase...

but do check out the others as well.

Various French retailer catalogues refer to other types of glassware as Pate de Verre, typically Schneider, so there is another original use of the term that is confusing. I will get these digitised eventually but for now cannot access them.

I have had one piece of Pate de Verre by Daum Nancy, and it was about the size of a little rice bowl.  It was part of the Jonquille series.  just an FYI:  under a blacklight, it glows a bright neon green!  Yes, it is vaseline/uranium glass.  A few years ago, they had a lamp and lampshade in this series, and if I remember correctly, the price was $8500.00 USD.  My little bowl was $300.  I sold it to my father-in-law, who gave it to my mother-in-law for a mother's day present.
