ID PLEASE: Scandinavian? Cased And "Hooped" Brown Vase
« on: December 19, 2009, 03:36:10 PM »
I don't know where this comes from, but one recently sold on ebay for a fair amount of money: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310183869634&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

it's 8.5" inches tall. Anyone have any ideas?

Surely someone will recgonise this one!
I checked through  http://www.designlasi.com/index.php?lang=2
Finnish glass website, similar to Nanny Still designs, but not there.
Maybe Holmegaard or Ekenas??

Anyone know??

Karl Friedrich Glas (Friedrichs Kristal) is often a good bet for these sorts of things too

The shape of the hoops remind me of some Friedrich vases, too. See:

But the top rim should be ground and polished not fire polished then.

Of the German factories, I think Hirschberg is more likely than Friedrich, but the thinness of the glass layers and the external colour of this vase aren't really synonymous with either factory.

My best bet is torn between Empoli although, again, the very thin casing is a worry but this cinder-toffee colour was very commonly made there, and China, where the thin casing of 'watery' white would have no problem fitting in.

Hello all.  Thanks for ll of your replies.  They are very much appreciated.  I was checking out this site: http://www.glaskilian.de/Home.36.0.html?&L=1  and came across the Friedrich glass and thought it was a possibility before I got to read the suggestions in this thread.  The interior glass does strike me as odd in that it is a light blue in color.  I'd really like to see a few examples of chinese glass that has this odd shape.  Does anyone know of any japanese or chinese glass companies by name?  I really don't think it's empoli, but i'm open to being directed to some examples that might be similar.

Several years ago I sold a similar / related vase in blue, I've managed to dig out the pictures from the depths of my hard drive. It had a label from our old friends Åseda (stating Bo Borgström as designer).
The proportions look to be slightly different and mine had a ground rim, not fire polished. The interior, however, was a very pale baby blue although at the time I was unsure if this was actually the colour of the inner layer or whether it was the blue outer casing showing through a thin layer of white.

Wouldn't the fire-rim preclude Åseda.

The brown one looks to me like an Aseda lookalike, rather than a variant
