Mermaid Vase - Any Thoughts?
« on: December 19, 2009, 05:40:52 PM »
A bit of a fun quiz ...

For many years, and before I moved into paperweight collecting, I have had a vase decorated with a Mermaid and other things, on a shelf and had never known anything about it. Until now, that is, having recently bought a book which made me say, "Aha! That's one of those!".

So, does anyone have any thoughts on where, when and by whom it may have been made and decorated? If you definitely know the answer, please don't respond too quickly as I think it will be interesting to see whether others can come close to an ID.

But if you do know for sure, I would be pleased to receive any additional information that may be available.

More info later.

Okay, I'm going to take a stab and say Bohemian. Or maybe French.  ::)  :-[

Kev, its very nice :o  I love the colours!
Theres some fantastic enamelled glass in Judith Millers 20th C Glass,
so if i had to choose something, id say Central European, my first guess is Haida ?

How about English. Even if the glass is not.

Unlikely to be french

it has a mono-tail

french mermaids usually are bi-pedal (or should that be bi-flipal)

-what ever it is I love it!

cheers

Mike

No correct answer yet.

I like Pamela's suggestion of Mucha-esque, and there may be a connection in terms of decorative design. But the vase is certainly not of the 1960s period when, according to an Internet search, the art of Mucha was back in vogue.

I also like Frank's suggestion that the artwork and the making of the glass may have been separate things. But it was not decorated in England.

And Mike's analysis of the mermaid tail is interesting.

There's a couple of other clues and one of them is a signature:

Kev, it reminds me somewhat of a rather nice Hannah Walton enamelled water set at the Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow but I'm probably way off base!

Sorry should watch my typing, meant UK :-) but I'd still go with Birmingham school circa 1900. Just guessing in case anyone thinks I am being erudite.  :chky:

Anne's thought would fit in with a picture in a certain new book  ;) Although it could be Hannah's sister Helen
