Hi Mike,

I'd love to see the iridised jet Lambton vase, I've never seen even a normal jet example of this pattern, only the catalogued colours plus pearl.

Baker & Crowe (1985, p.12) do mention that items in Pearl or 'Moonstone Opal' were given a "stannous chloride wash" while still hot to give what they describe as a "slight degree of pearly opalescence" (i'm sure they mean iridescence here), though this wasn't particularly evident on the few pearl plates/ bowls I've seen.

I'd love to see a pic of the iridised Lambton vases too.

Steven, you noted the point in Baker & Crowe that I have mentioned and referenced in Magic and Mystery 2 (i.e. the stannous chloride wash comment). It's a very significant fact.

Hi

alas its going to be a long wait -I don't delve in to the deep crates too often! -It would take me a whole day to find them

but one day I will find them and post pictures for you

From memory the Jet is quite obviously iridised, the pearl is less so, but much more that usual pearl

Being a typical glassnut I have quite a big collection of Jet and Pearl Jobling
-always wanted to find a jet greek lady -managed pearl and opal but never jet

cheers

M

I'm stunned to discover that I think I have one of these 1054 pieces tucked away in a box. I was unsure of the maker and had never thought of Jobling when we bought it (some 15 or so years ago). So it was packed away! I have just located it and now I would be grateful if the members of the 1054 club would confirm (or otherwise) for me that is what I have.

It is a cupped in bowl and it is iridised - beautifully! It is deep purple just like Steven's piece and it has a star on the base that is identical to Steven's. I'll post photos asap.

Here are the photos of our bowl. I'd be grateful if the Jobling 1054 club ( ;)) could confirm the bowl's identity.

Thanks  :-*

Glen — Lovely photographs.   Mmmmm.   Delicious.   I never thought I could get so enthusiastic about Carnival glass, but then your bowl and Steven's plate are 1054 — in a class of its own.   I can't help wondering if they fit each other (somewhere to put the pips, perhaps.)

I hope that the classic 1054 star with its very slightly swagged profile will generate some more 1054 discoveries.   We haven't seen any flared bowls yet ... or other colours ...

Well, Glen, welcome to the very select 1054 collectors club.   The only qualification is ownership of one or more examples of 1054, 1054½ or 1055, together with a smile  ;D

Now, I must get my fruit set photographed.

Finally found a jet Lambton vase with iridised finish!  :D

The iridescence is very subtle, much less intense than on my 1054 plate, however the effect is obvious, especially when you put the vase next to a piece of plain jet glass.

Only the exterior surface of the vase is iridised. It is a very shiny iridescence which gives the piece a silvery/ pewtery sheen. Towards the top of the vase the iridescence becomes more colourful with a warmer, golder tone.

It really is a stunning vase. The photos don't really do it justice. However, you can see the iridescence on the picture of the top portion of the vase, while the shot from above shows the contrast between the silvery exterior and plain black interior.
