alum bay or mtarfa perhaps? any other ideas welcome please
« on: January 06, 2010, 12:43:59 PM »
Not marked similar technique to another alum bay piece I have.
Pontil is  broken off in a neat circle but not polished, the mix of colours is turquoise, dark blue and white with mostly white showing through on the inside although doesn't look cased white, looks like white was the first colour before the turquoise was put on.  Apologies for my poor terminology :spls:. The base at the pontil is nearly clear glass, with flecks of turquoise and white on it, you can see through it to the other side  ;D.  About 3" tall and 3.5-4" wide
Any information would be much appreciated.

I would assume Alum Bay, I have seen several (a few with labels and all in different colours) but they were all larger at around 5 or so inches in height. Yours is quite squat, maybe the reason why it is not so tall. I would be surprised if it turned out to be Mtafa.

Here is a 'tall' one in black glass with white/clear speckles that let light through (photographed from a low angle).

thanks John .  Yes I agree all the Alum Bay ones I have seen have been taller and thinner in shape.

I do like the squat shape and the colour effect but not the frilled rim to be honest  ;D

Looks like a relative of these, although the blue one claims to be 100m tall! http://www.alumbayglass.co.uk/browse_prod_sub.php?sid=16

'...claims to be 100m tall! '  :24:

not seen it on the news compared to the Dubai tower yet though  ;D
Thanks for that Christine - I think mine's a hybrid.

I'd agree, Alum Bay. Mtarfa would be much thicker and heavier. Alum Bay glass tends to be very finely blown, almost lampwork thin.

(I don't like frilly bits either!)
