I believe you have a home-made paperweight as there are a few in my collection that are similar to yours.  (One holds a tiny painted porcelain disc; the other, different colors of paper curled into an intricate design.)  This style of weight was (is?) popular for keeping something special, be it object or photo.

My best .... Lily  :)

(I'll post photos later.)

I think perhaps home-filled would be more accurate, as there appears to be air above the sand dollar

Perhaps it's acrylic and not glass?

Yes, I think "hand-filled" is a more accurate term.  Mine are definitely glass though.  Here are the photos, including an example.  The magnification is very nice in the dome weights.  The flatter one I think is just more for protection/preservation as the design appears the same size from all angles.

As an aside, people used to place locks of hair, photos, special items belonging to a deceased loved one in this type of weight.  They were appropriately called "mourning weights".  There are examples on--where else?--eBay! ;D

thanks for sending me the pics., very interesting, what a great idea that was, mourning weight. I never knew that, thanks for the info., it is nice to learn new things everyday like this.
Maybe someone love sand dollars and it was a reminder, how cool....
Have a great day ;D!!!

You're very welcome, zsoka. :)  By the way, most of the dome is solid glass.  There is only a relatively shallow area for what may be placed in such a weight.

Lily
