Johann Loetz?
« on: February 25, 2010, 03:27:07 PM »
A lot of speculation on the Ebay discussion boards regarding this closed auction.  Any opinions?

Ebay item # 320492849386

I am curious as to why Johann would add "Austria" to his signature in the 1840s.

that seems to be too much honour for a coursely made, quickly decorated and extremely ugly bottle. Nothing seems to fit there - not the shape, not the finish, not the quickly sloshed on paint - I think someone somewhere is rolling on the floor with laughter and scaring the cat.

If that is Loetz,. I will eat it..... and if the $21500 bid is not a shill bid  or a complete joke, I will feel deeply sorry that someone with that much money is actually that uneducated about glass..... the bidder has 0 feedbacks and the seller has 23.....

A for effort in terms of producing a listing that would almost put War and Peace to shame. Did anyone actually read it all?

The bid? Someone drunk, maybe blind too or a shill bid.

John

I have a general rule I follow on ebay.... and all other internet venues... If they write in all caps I do not read it or buy from them, as it is generally, IMHO the sign of a lazy typist, who would generally, again IMHO be an even worse researcher.....  I think this "auction" and I use the term lightly.... reinforces to a great degree, that belief on my part....

After all, the signature has to be valid because they did not have electricity for a vibrating engraver.....  and god knows they had no mechanical means of making something vibrate in those days.... they weren't that advanced were they????   :24:

Perhaps Johann simply had a tremor after creating such a breath-taking piece?  :24:

:-\ That is about the ugliest vase I've ever seen. It is going to take me at least a week to recover.  It was like seeing a pile of decaying bodies.  :P

I recognize the signature. It looks like the same hand that signs "Loetz, Austria" on Kralik vases and anything else that could pass for Bohemian.
