Guépière/Wasp Trap but I think not
« on: March 19, 2010, 06:55:28 PM »
This one has me totally confused, I thought this was a lovely clean crisp example of a wasp trap but I think it would be impossible for the wasps to be trapped.  If the item was standing as meant to be it has no means for the wasp to get underneath nor would it be able to get to the sugared water/old fruit as it would bang its head.  they could go in the top way but quite easily fly out again.  I have found a marking which I think is acid etched in quite fancy lettering and numbering.  Think it reads either HG5 or H65 then M3 underneath.  Now this is where someone tells me it is something to do with an oil lamp?  Quite a heavy item and not of thin glass also quite a large item.  I cannot measure unfortunately as the DD still has the tape measure somewhere but my guess is roughly.  Top opening approx 6inch wide, bottom bulb 10inch wide, bottom opening 3inch wide, height maybe10-12inch sorry they really are rough measurements.
Any thoughts please
TIA

Could it be the top to a lacemakers lamp?

... or some kind of gimmick? Have you tried to put something interesting under
it and filled it with water? Should do a nice magnifying effect.

OH and I have decided nothing to do with a lamp keith as it would suffocate the flame.  Dirk we quite like that idea.
However, we have since been chatting and have decided that it could still be a Wasp Trap.  Imagine the wasp flies in bangs itself on the ball gets knocked off into the sugared water and drowns? or same but struggles to fly back up because of the curve of the ball and therefore gets trapped?? Keep your thoughts coming.

To help identify this, you could do with is a quantity of annoying wasps and some beer-sugary solution of choice ! ;D

Or maybe a decanter, with a cooling bit to put ice in, or something along that line?

Carolyn

Edit: But after looking at the picture again, that wouldn't work, so ignore me!  ::)[/color]

Lol Carolyn that was one process of thought going on there.  One huge decanter full of wine and try not to spill any!  I appreciate any thoughts though.
