Maybe it is and maybe it isn't Mdina -vase for I.D
« on: April 22, 2010, 09:46:20 AM »
Well I really am pushing the boat out with this one I think! Tall shouldered vase of mottled yellow with broad trailing of patchy red/brown glass. Appears to be a fire polished mouth, ground matte base, with the remains of a pontil scar. 14cm H with a 5 cm base. I have put up the only photo I have- will dig it out of storage if needed for further photos. any comments on I.D. gratefully received.  Please be gentle! regards from a perfect autumn day in New Zealand -- Carol

I can see why your first thought was Mdina. The base is not right though, but you never know.  I don't follow 80+ Mdina closely, but I'll have look around and see what I can come up with.  I know the modern Earth range isn't as yellow as this.

Mdina website - http://mdinaglass.net/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=MG&Category_Code=80

Worth a look, if only to learn the current shapes/colours.

I'd need to get my mitts on it.
Is it slightly iridescent, or is that just the lighting?

It's not a shape I've seen, but never say never.
It might even be Malta Decorative Glass, that's a wee story we're currently researching, and trying to accumulate evidence for.....  the ground base would fit that.

Or it could be something like it, from an Antipodean maker?

Many thanks ladies for your comments Suzy I will look at the link and Sue- from memory it is slightly iridescent and your comment on an antipodean maker is spooky as it was sold as NZ made glass, but I had my doubts when I purchased way back in 07. Will did it out this weekend and post pix of the base. again thanks for the reply's. Another perfect autumn day is on it's way here in NZ-hehe  Carol

If it's slightly iridescent, I'd discount Maltese, but I would like to get my mitts on it. It looks too shiny, and too flat (in terms of the 3-D depth of the colours in the glass). Jury still out!

As promised-some more pictures of this little charmer-colour not iridescent just translucent. Hopefully the pictures will aid in identification. regards from a now cloudy NZ, Carol

Thanks for these. On balance, I would have to say I don't think it's Mdina. The strapping bits seem to be full of roundish, almost clear shapes, rather than streaky reds and browns, I've never seen this sort of broken pontil mark in conjunction with a ground base before. It's just not quite right.

I would perhaps go back to the NZ studio glass theory. Nice piece

God loves a trier!!!   :-* Many  thanks to Sue and Christine for your informative comments- looking back on my posts for Mdina and taking on board the NZ connection I will have to look local! I will have to scare up  early NZ glass makers information on the TradeMe message forum- it has been quite informative in the past. regards Carol, weatherwise autumn/winter seems to have kicked in with a vengeance, time for fires and fluffy slippers ;D

(* Angela is also the GMB owner, of course.)
