Topic: are these whitefriars?

I have 3 lovely vases, and was wondering if someone could identify these? I was told they were possibly Whitefriars, but I have no idea?

Hi Tim, and welcome to the board. It helps enormously if you would post each item in a separate topic please so we don't lose track of what we're saying about each of them, and makes for archiving the items easier afterwards too.

The top one of your three has been discussed on the board before but I'm not sure we reached a conclusion...

Can't help with the other two though, sorry, but no doubt someone will be able to. I'll move this to GLASS as we've not reason to think these are British / Irish glass yet.

I think I am now completely confused about the first vase, seems to be a tricky one.

Funnily enough, I could tell from the selection of vases that you are in Australia! The first two are very common here.

The first two are definitely not Whitefriars, and the I don't recognise. The first one isn't actually tricky. I have a picture somewhere on an old computer in which this vase is labelled "Old Colony, Made in Japan". However, it was getting on seven or eight years ago, and I'd stolen the pic from an eBay auction without at the time realising that it was unethical. Thus, even if I can find it on the old hard drives, I won't be able to post it.

So for now it remains a mystery until it crops up on eBay with a label again.

I can say that none are Whitefriars.  I'd agree that the first one is possibly Japanese, certainly seen similar textures on vases with labels from Japan  the orange one could be Caithness , no idea on the third one.

Hi there The 1st is a riihimaki piece and is pictured in most millers books. The other 2 I'm not sure, could well be Caithness.

Ah! Now I see why these are often on ebay described as Riihimaki!!! You have to take the Millers attributions with a large pinch of salt sometimes!!

The first one is Japanese. As to the other 2 i have no clue. The first one I have in green but have seen many similar examples in varying colours all attributed to Riihimaki. Am yet to locate the Japanese company that made them and most likely never will. Still a good piece and I am thinking one of the better Japanese makers. It is definitely in the style of many Scandi pieces with a Whitefriars feel.
