Roman style vase...venitian?...Powell?...?
« on: April 30, 2010, 03:27:16 PM »
Opinions sought...

Clear glass 18.5cm (7 1/4") high, applied ruffled collar and tooled strap to one side. Nice flat polished base with clean circular polished pontil mark in the middle, no makers marks.

I'm sure it has some age and quality that might no be apparent in the photos...any ideas who made it much appreciated.

Martyn.

Yep, John is quite right. For instance, certainly Strombergshyttan also made 'leather bottle' carafes. The difficulty in photos is that there is no sense of weight for the given item; in my experience this is significant in diagnosing these carafes. Additionally, and interlinked, is the thickness of the glass. Then comes the rest of the diagnosis, including, the general shape, the footprint/plan of the piece, the way the 'rat-tail' (lace) is formed,..........well, you get the picture (or maybe you don't) :o ;) :o

So Nigel, who made this one and when...I'll let you have three additional questions and two guesses.

Thanks to Chris and JP BTW.

A couple more clues and a base shot just in case it helps.

The footprint is circular, slightly kicked base to the middle inside, glass is fairly clear with a slightly lead grey tone. Thicker at base and rim otherwise fairly finely blown, weighs 400g so not too heavy.
