Ruby vase with optical effects, any ideas?
« on: May 16, 2010, 02:03:30 PM »
I have no idea what to think of this one. It's a old style ruby colour vase, with some optical effects in the glass itself. The foot is fused on, and it's not really done very neatly as you can see on the photo's. Still, the style is rather retro for a modern piece, so I thought it was at least worth posting and see if what could be learned from it. Any ideas or observations welcome.

Measurements: 24.5 cm high, 6.3 cm wide at the rim and 7.3 cm at the base.

I was told by a collector this weekend that this type of vase used to be made in Murano. So with that little bit of extra info, I thought it was a good excuse to bump it and see whether the more Murano inclined might be able to add their ideas on that.

I doubt this one is from Murano. With a bit of imagination I could imagine Empoli - but the added foot looks very Chinese. Also, by its character it is a mass produced vase; there is no real bonus in design or quality..... so I vote mainland China.

Thanks, Ivo. That means it has fullfilled its purpose as a learning tool, and I can simply return it to charity.

I'm not so sure that tools are less expensive. I spend more money on books (and a blacklight for instance) already than on glass :) In comparison, buying the wrong vase from a charity shop is much, much cheaper.

Too bad that offer wasn't there last week, when I actually visited Leiden to take home lots and lots of new glass (decent stuff even)  - some of which will make it's way to the forum in due time :)
