Topic: Perthshire paperweight

Hi all
this pretty weight was put right in front of jon on our rounds at the charity shop and he grabbed it i think before it even hit the shelf, he was very pleased with himself.
The weight looks brand new in perfect conditon in fact i could hardly beleive it when i got the eye glass on the dated cane and read P 1978 making it 1 year older than me
I have found a couple with the same layout but different colours on ebay but none with any more detail than perthshire paperweight, could somebody tell me the PP number?? Also any idea on who would have designed it, i thought it looked very similar to John Deacons work but there is no thistle (did all of his work have a thistle)
Is there a reliable site with perthshire weights in detail, like the smugmug strathearn weights page

Hi,

It is a PP 31. Do not know who designed it.

I have never come across a Perthshire paperweight website. I get most of my information from the Mahoney & McClanahan's book on Perthshire paperweights.

The dilemna is how to spend (limited) funds: on acquiring more glass? or books on glass (to recognise the bargains)? Tricky...

oh yeah i know that one  :cry:, although i have found with most of my books they tend to pay for themselves very quickly (and i say most as there have been a few purchases which i have found not that useful so far)
So when i get a chance i do tend to buy them, there is 2 fairs here in east anglia which have glass book sellers who i go to quite regular now and make sure when i go to those fairs i take and extra few pennies to pick up a new book. One is at the Norfolk showground, and the other is at Culford School art deco fair near Bury st Edmunds, both very reasonably priced, i would say the chap at culford has a better selection though

Don't worry about the colours: these types of weight come in endless colour variations - only the layout is of importance.

Not any I'm aware of: it's on the to-do-list for Scotland's Glass - but we have to finish Caithness first. Likely we'll tackle Selkirk next, as for Selkirk there is neither a useful web page, nor a book. Investing in the "Complete Guide ..." for Perthshire will be worthwhile!

look forward to the Selkirk part i have about 10 i think, or i did have might have sold a couple now.
will definatly add the book to the list, there are quite a few im after. You hardly ever find second hand books on glass, even on ebay, (im not a lover of amozen to be honest but will have to get to grips with it at some point)
I was hoping to pick up a few new books at the glass fair in Cambridge but there was hardly any books at all, infact i think Nigel was the only person with any.

Hi there.

The best book I've seen for Selkirk is the Schiffer publication by John Simmons called "Paperweights of Great Britain".

It has photos of several Selkirk weights as well as a comlpete year-by-year list.

And of course there's the bonus of lots of other artists, Ysart et al.

Hi Michelle

For secondhand glass books try abebooks.co.uk - virtually every secondhand bookseller in the world lists on here. The cheapest place to buy is from America and USPS do a flat rate airmail envelope which means that it only costs around £5 to get a book across the pond regardless of weight - usually arrives in 5 working days.

Caution on the Perthshire book as a new edition is due for publication shortly - the current book only covers up to and including 1997 - the new edition will also cover 1998 - 2001.

Re glass fairs - Don't forget the Cambridge glass fair held at Chilford Hall Vineyard next one is 26th September - twice yearly

many thanks Keith will have to add that one to the list too (im gonna need to pick some more hours up at work) sadly i must admit my paperweight books are quite limited as yet, although i have picked a couple up this year, so i am trying to bulk them out a bit.
Derek, thanks for that i think i will probably wait untill the new one is released. Being lucky enough to only live 15 miles from cambridge the glass fair is marked down in my diary... im already saving for the september one  :thup: so to all that are selling make sure you bring any books you want to sell, because i will be buying 
I was hoping Bob Hall would be there with some books in feb, i bought his Old english paperweights book which he kindly signed for me, but unfortunitly i didnt see him about (it was incredibly busy when i was there so highly likely i missed him)
