uranium vase with blue knob- any ideas?
« on: April 28, 2007, 09:39:44 PM »
I got this uranium vase yesterday at the East Coast Nat'l in Harrisburg, PA.  It is over 14 inches tall.  The glass is so thin above the blue knob that the seller thought it was clear glass with a vaseline foot.   I put a blacklight on it, and all of it glowed, including the blue knob.  It has a polished pontil, a thumbprint spot pattern, and a turned down rim.  The color in the center photo is pretty accurate.

any help is appreciated.  the photo on the left is in a dark room with UV.  the photo on the right is with blacklight in a room with sunlight.  center photo was taken outdoors in the shadows, with no flash.

Dave — Fascinating.   Queries:
  • Is the thumbprint spot pattern airtrap or mould blown?
  • Is the graduation in the colour due to the thickness of the glass or the thickness of a coloured layer, i.e. is it coloured glass cased in crystal?   Compare with the graduated ruby layer shown here.
  • Does wear on the base give any indication of age?

I don't know the mechanics of 'air trap'.  If you can tell me what to look for, will do so.  if you are talking controlled bubble, it is not that.  there is an optic effect, but there is no bubbles.  they are all uniformly shaped.  they can be felt on both insides and outsides.  there is honest wear on the base.  the glass does not seem to be cased at the top rim or the foot.  I can't tell on the blue ball connector knob.
    regards

Dave, the blue knob reminds me of some of the things that Vittorio Zecchin made for Venini. Zecchin's work is not signed. The description you gave sounds like soffiati and the pattern looks like it was made using a balloton. Zecchin designed a lot of soffiati for three companies that I know of, but I am not aware of any balloton designs he did. Nor have I seen uranium in his designs. Still I feel that the vase could be Venetian glass from the 1930s. I hope that you got a good price for it. It was quite lovely.
