Your vase might be part of the Viking Epic range http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Viking-Epic-Vase-Charcoal-1171-/200617206323

Ooooooo - Thanks Lustrousstone!!  :kissy: :kissy:

Yeah, maybe that will lead us somewhere.  Good find there!  The bottom bases kinda look similar there.  Definitely worth hunting around some more.  Thanks   ;)

Gentle Bump on this again :spls: -- to see if any additional thoughts/date?  Always worth a try.

Maybe *IF* Viking was adding to the title that would help..........??

It is quite a Massive Piece!

Can't help unfortunately except to say its not Viking, Tiffin or Fostoria.

Ohio beat me to the punch, but I'm going to post this anyway:

Most of Viking's production was molded, rather than free-blown.  The few blown pieces they made had rough pontils.  I'm fairly certain it's not Tiffin, either; I don't believe they had a gray color like this.

Fostoria might be a possibility, as their few blown artware lines are so obscure that I've only ever seen them in books.
Robert

Looked at Sculpture line in Long & Seate, however its nothing but line drawings & that shape isn't there. They did have a hand shop & I've had a few of those pieces, however every one I've handled had the acid etched Fostoria signature. Have to admit that the indented bottom of the base looks like stuff a few of the larger Epic vases had & I do have four Epic catalog pages from 1959, but again shape is just not there. The one possibility though is an Epic piece that simply was not cataloged...only thing that bothers me is the mass & thickness of the glass...Epic can be heavy, but that a stretch for the mass of Rose's piece, but still its a maybe, especially if it were made during the Dalzell-Viking period since there were a couple of years where no catalogs were printed. I'm not convinced that the piece isn't pressed either, several Epic vases were pressed with a mold bustoff & then the bottom ground & fire polished.  For a good many years I'd make a couple of trips down to the IG hayshed, cross the river & run down to New Martinsville to see what was going on at Viking...did that until IG closed & then when Dalzell gave it up...well that was that.

Thanks for re-visiting (and taking the time) with this post and your new additional comments ohio and beaubow.

Might remain a mystery but such a striking vase / Size / and weight.  I am still going to take another good look around it (and weigh it) as I do not think I had weighed it before (just know it is heavy).  Will find out true weigh today.  It appears to be so well made -- that I just can't imagine that there can not be another in the world.  Mind you if we do not have a maker name - will always makes it harder to find another....but will keep trying here.

I AM keep my radar out on this one when on the Net.  ;)

....have taken the weight of it -- it is 4.34 pounds.  Also note the funny shaped bottom part of the inside?  Any clues there ????

In the window light, it is a purplish color.  Still wondering if this additional info helps at all.

Thanks   :ghug:

OK Rose...is the smoke color cased in purple or is the smoke color applied over the purple...if uncertain about the applied part use your fingernail to see if can feel the seams where it was applied. Your latest picture may make all the difference in the world. Ken

Just a quick tip when weighing the item with bathroom scales. Step on and weigh yourself then hold the glass and step on again. minus ne from the other and thats as close as it gets. i did it with a 6.4 kg item (not Glass) and had it right when I took it to the Post office.  Pete
