I think knife rests were phased out in the 1960s - until then they were handy wedding presents, I've never known anyone to actually buy some...  or even use some. I am under the impression the height of popularity was in the late twenties and early thirties.

A gentleman who was a friend of my Dad's in his retirement flats had a large collection of knife rests - George was 92 when he died a couple of years ago, but he was delighted to show me them all - in fact he was delighted to meet another collector of anything - somebody who would understand his passion!
I'm pretty sure he did have a set like this one. Few were marked, they can be made from many materials - silver, glass, brass, spelter, silver plate...

I used to keep my eyes open for them for George, as he was unable to get out and about himself.
I did find one unusual set, in silver plate, a kiwi-like bird on one side, a wallaby on the other.
This led me to suspect they might have been antipodean, so I would imagine they were made in various places around the world.
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Earth without art is just eh.

There is a whole page of knife rests in the Molineaux Webb pattern book, time period 1845 to 1870. Most are fairly bland but there is one in the shape of a crown. Also they did one in ruby glass and another in opal. There's one they called "oriental" which is dull yellow - just possibly uranium glass - it is shaped a bit like a comb with two small protrusions at the top.
