German or Scandinavian High Relief Bubble Vase
« on: July 21, 2010, 10:00:04 PM »
Gotta figure Scandinavian or W. German (bought it from a seller in Germany), but I'd really like to identify the company, designer would be marvelous.  The design is different on each side, and height is about 9 1/2".  No identifying marks at all on the bottom.
Thanks.
Forrest

I've seen this one (in a clear version, not smoked) with a clearly visible label on ebay from the German factory Gral glas. I tend to believe that attribution. Can't remember if I've seen a designer, but with the factory name you might be able to find out more about it.

Definitely Gralglas, got a labelled one in clear, too.

Thanks everyone.  The only Gral designer I've heard of so far is Prof. Konrad Habermeier, but that doesn't mean he did this one.  If anyone finds out, I'd love to know.

According to the book 20th Century Factory Glass, a lot of designers worked in some capacity for Gral glas between the 50s and 70s, so it might be difficult to pinpoint it specifically without more inside knowledge or trustworhty printed sources which specifically name designers. And Ebay certainly won't help there, many sellers will just put Habermeier on a piece if they think it will sell better.

Anyway, something to look out for: I've read on this forum that a book on Gral glass is in the making, that might help you in the future to attach a name.

There´s an exhibition catalogue about Habermeier, which I luckily own. I don´t know if it claims
to be comprehensive, but this design isn´t featured in it.
Karl Wiedmann also worked for them and Ivo´s book mentions a Hans R. Janssen, which I admit
I´ve never heard of before.  ;D
The book on Gralglas will be released on November 15th. I don´t think I´ll be able to wait for
Christmas to get it...  :wsh:

edit: little brainwave - I do have heard of Janssen, he made these iridised designs. I thinks they
are signed Aomi - numbering - Janssen or similar. Also I recall there was (or is) a Gralglas on
   ebay.de signed with da Costa.

edit 2: It´s still there - very nice piece of ariel technique:
