information re coloured lidded sugar/compote/sweetmeat?
« on: September 13, 2010, 07:20:04 PM »
This seems unusual  -  cut glass that has a coloured almost iridescent surface - with the bottom 2mm, plus the complete underside of the foot, untreated (maybe it stood in some sand?)    6.25 inches/160mm tall.   It 'pings' quite well, so am thinking lead content  -  and has the coating to some extent inside both the bowl and lid.   Have tried scratching with fingernail, but the coating is fast - a sort of dull brown pinkish colour, almost with a residue of dirt.    The underside has a ground and nicely polished concave pontil, with radiating cut lines as in the picture.   Rims of both  the lid and base have been also been ground, polished and bevelled, and are not 'coloured'.  What do people think this might be, and any thoughts on the colouring/iridescence.    Thanks for looking. :)

Hi Paul S.

It is kinda looks like Pink, and Brown together....and looks like iridescent to me.  Would it be a *Candy Dish*?  Just as a wild guess here.  Carnival Glass I wonder ?  Nice Find

thanks Rose - and it baffles me - I really haven't a clue.   I'ts style is oldish (maybe even C19) - but does look as though someone has tried to give the piece a 'carnival iridescence' - but it seems not to have worked quite        Please note, however, that we don't eat candy in Surrey (UK) ......we may snort coke, booze too much, and fornicate - but no candy. :)

looking again, I might have added that.............the ogee sweep of the lid, plus the type of finial might be late C19 eastern States possible, but am I right in thinking that the US material might more likely have been pressed.? :pb:
