Small vase, czech?
« on: September 24, 2010, 09:48:46 AM »
It's 16 cm high, 5 cm across the base, some signs of age at the base.

It would really surprise me if it wasn't Czech, but I'm not sure if it's ZBS or perhaps Mstisov or Skrdlovice. Zemek would be my first choice for designer, but that's mostly because of these coloured fused green lobes attached to a different colour body - that just feels very much like his sort of style to me, but I have nothing to back it up. Could be totally wrong of course...

Any ideas?

I am fairly certain this is late Palme Konig production, 1950's and may well be a Zemek design. In Czechoslovak Glass Review 1957/8 it is given the PN 52068/15cm in an article on modern Palme Konig production.

Also featured in the article is this lovely, shy, discreet, blink and you miss it, ashtray, very likely designed by a Dr Volf.

Our friend Jindrich may be able to provide some more information,

I do feel a bit stupid, but I can't make the connection since I'm not really into pre-wwII glass.

I read that the Pallme König factory was taken over by the Czech government in 1945, I guess they renamed it. Do you happen to know the common way to refer to this factory in post-war times, by place or Czech sounding name? And are there any sources that would help me get a feel for the post-war production of this particular factory? I haven't come across it so far.

As far as I know, it was still called Palme-König into the early 1950's,

Well Anik,
even the factories were nationalised in 1945, the old names were also used for commercial purposes and export also in 50ties. The strict end of ussage old names came in 1958/9 after succes at Expo in Brussel.

This piece was designed by Frantisek Zemek, I have found attribution to Mstisov - but I must investigate it - it can be the same factory, only the name was changed, headquater moved or something like this.

Thanks Jindrich. I'm still trying to learn about the different post-war Czech factories, companies, trademarks, every little bit helps. And I'm glad my Zemek style intuition was on the mark for a change :)
