Identification - Smoke Black Vase, Cased with Applied Handle
« on: October 22, 2010, 12:51:24 AM »
I purchased this vase in a lot at a local auction. It feels sorta Finnish or Scandinavian to me and was in fact in a box with a number of marked items from the same locations. I am fairly certain it is mid-century, the glass feels and looks old and has a lot of characteristics of art glass from this period. It is cased, has a polished pontil and an applied clear crystal handle.

I just can't quite place it, or find anything exactly like it for comparison.  It's beautiful! Unfortunately the pictures make it appear shiny black when in fact it is a deep smokey black and not pure black at all. I'd love some help with identifying this piece, I'm quite taken with it.

This is a seriously heavy piece by the look of it and I would sooner place it in Poland or Czechoslovakia. Reason is the weight, the uneven way the outer layer meets the inner, the thickness, the robust bottom finish and the contrasting clear handle.

The contrasting clear appliques and handles are to me unmistakable. I am not venturing a factory but I would not be surprised if this is from Tarnow or Prachen....

Thank you! That gives me an awesome place to start looking. Your examples are fantastic and you are right, definitely quite similar. That handle was throwing me off for sure! Thanks again.

Jollypolly, I believe your vase (and Ivo's white vase) is Polish, probably by Tarnowiec glassworks.  I've got several similar pieces.  Here are three which are 100% Polish.  :)

Anik - I do believe you are right! I just had some success searching with the Tarnowiec name. Thank you so much.

In fact Ivo I found someone with your white vase for sale, still with the Tarnowiec sticker on it. Are we allowed to post links here? If you are interested in just seeing it I can attach a link.

Thanks again for the help!

Please do. I'm always fascinated to know what people think it is worth.

Thank you for your trouble. It's a fair price I think, and I will label mine accordingly...  :hi: :hi: :hi:
