Black Satin Compote - US Glass Tiffin?
« on: November 28, 2010, 03:21:09 AM »
(apologies if this double post, tried earlier but something got confused.)

I think this is Tiffin but I'm not positive.   It measures 5-3/4" tall, 7" across the top, and 4" across the foot.  I would have thought Tiffin of this shape to have a wider foot.  Everything else about it looks right to me.

The gold decoration is very nice - guess an art deco style.  Looks better in hand than it does in the photos.

So any Tiffin experts care to chime in... much appreciated, -Buck

Thanks Ken, I was pretty sure that it was.  I'd seen 1920s Tiffan black satin vases with gold painted floral but I hadn't see compotes like this one with that decoration.  Is this black satin glass what Tiffin called Black Amethyst?  It's very dark, I haven't had an opportunity to try to see sunlight through it yet.  -Buck

Yes its Black Amethyst & the decoration is one of several that may have been used by Tiffin or it may have been that an outside decorating firm purchased the blank & decorated it themselves as it remains unidentifed as to source. It is from the 20's. Attached is a pic of a piece that I used to have with the same decoration just a slightly different variation.
