One for the boffins... why no satin glass in dark glass?
« on: December 09, 2010, 02:15:37 PM »
Could some one tell me why I've never seen satin glass(air-trap) etc.. in darker colours, all the pastel shades yes,but is there a 'technical' reason  I suppose I'll now see lots :pb:

What colours and styles were fashionable when they were made?

Not a clue John, but there are other types of glass from the late 19th and early 20th that had the darker tones so why not?

Satinisation adds a whitish finish to things - this doesn't look good on dark colours - it washes them all out.
Pastels are all washed out in the first place.

I imagine folk who prefer dark/deep colours don't actually want them all pastelised, while, as it doesn't affect pastels, it doesn't affect those who prefer these.
I've got a bit of "black" satinised glass - it's a dull, dusty-looking grey.

also, just my personal theory, but lighting wasn't what it is now back then.  And clear, or cut crystal as well as pastel coloured pale shades a) reflect better in dimmer light sources/candles/flame light than dark colours do and b) stand out better against darker wall shades -  I do think wall shades tended to be darker/more intense then
