Jiri Suhajek, Karlovarske Sklarny
« on: December 24, 2010, 08:13:37 PM »
Heya!

I've managed to dig up this stunner (IMO) by Jiri Suhajek for Karlovarske Sklarny. Whenever I've seen these there's always reference to Moser, but what is the connection between Karlovarske Sklarny and Moser?

Best Regards
Emil

From what I understand it's the same factory (but I'm sure others will be able to supply more info or correct me). Moser was a Bohemian glassworks. When it was nationalized by the Czechoslovakian government, they officially renamed it Kalovarske Sklarny, though the name 'Moser' was still used on labels and for export purposes because it had a wide international name recognition.

PS - Nice piece!

Correct Astrid,
Moser was founded in 1957 as private family company by Ludwig Moser. Before WWII in 1934 the Moser was transformed to share corporation and the shares sold to Unionbank and family Moser beeing Jews happily escaped from Czechoslovakia befor Nazzi ocupation and anection of Sudetenland. Than in 1939 was Moser corporation nationalised by German nazzi state. In 1945 was this factory overtaken by Czechoslovakian state and after after some turbulences estabilshed as Karlovarske sklo n.p. (Moser).

The traditional production of Moser was cut glass. When in 1964-5 was closed glass factory in Mstisov, the part of production and workers were transfered to Karlovy Vary and employed in Karlovarske sklo n.p (Moser). The Rhapsody range from Zemek continued in production there. At that time the main "hutní sklo" designes made Mr. Vladimír Jelínek. Moser free hand pieces however were later refined by cutting, see Hi Lo Sklo how looked this design.
Later when Crystalex corporation was created, the Karlovarske sko became a part of this corporation. In thsi time Mr. Suhajek, who worked for Crystalex designed his famous pieces for Karlovarske sklo (Moser).

In 1990-1 was Moser privatised again. Surprisingly Moser nowadays is proud about Jelinek and Suhajek designs, but the keep the distance from pieces designed by Zemek, possibly this design is for current management of Moser not very sophisticated. Moser contiunues in cut glass production of top quality and Hhiutni sklo is shor episode in history....
