I had a blue swirled IOW piece the size of a football sat on a shelf for 3 years awaiting ID, I sta there for hours trying in my mind to make a 'leaping salmon' out of the pontil mark. The sad thing is I'd seen the IOW mark a good few times before but for some reason couldnt put 2 and 2 together with this piece.
In the end I just put it on Ebay for 9.99 as a Strathearn style studio vase, I felt a right right numpty when a kind ebayer told me it was IOW. The 30 or so watchers told me that it was a good find. 

I still thank that kind ebay buyer coz it sold for a good few quid once relisted ...

It was just so big yet it didnt seem that good a quality to be IOW, there was air bubbles in it, I'd actualy looked at IOW but didnt see anything that looked remotely like it.

I just missed the pontil mark or couldnt make a flame out of it. Even the winner couldnt beleve how big it was once she receved it. It was the size of a football over 12 inches all round & 14 with the neck I seem to remember.

It was kind of the guy who let me know. I sometimes do it myself, mostly for private sellers & some charitys.

Bubbles are good! The early IoW bits 'should' have bubbles - all part of the design. Got any photos of it Shugs?

Grumps got really excited with your initial thoughts, it seems to have gone rather flat, really thought after you agreed with me it had potential it may have generated a bit of interest, any IoW experts on here? I know Suzy but that's about it, anyone a member of the Isle of Wight site? maybe link the thread to your site.

Chris your vase has no attribute which strikes me as IoW, the shape is not familiar, the swirls of colour look crude and there is no applied blob of glass on the base with an impressed mark like the IoW from the seventies.

What does it feel like? Quality or tat?

that base reminds of two Alum Bay pieces I had.  I also wondered about Kerry Glass perhaps?

It had that amount of bubbles but it was blue. it honestly didnt feel to have a great deal of quality to it.

there may be a photo on my old computor but it was about 2 years ago i sold it for around £100

I have seen a small bit, exactly the same shape as this, for sale on ebay, in what looked like Aurene (I didn't buy it). Early IoWSG is often more "crude" than later work.
Michael Harris only really first got his hands on hot glass in 1967. It takes about 10 years to train as a masterglassmaker - and he was training himself, forever trying to push boundaries forward - he'd only been working with glass for 6-7 years when he set up the IoW Studio. He also took considerable time out from learning while setting studios up - there were serious practical and political difficulties at Mdina initially, and it took a wee while to find the location for IoWSG too. Then he was trying to get Kerry Glass going......
