Strapped vase
« on: January 30, 2011, 05:13:28 PM »
Please can anybody tell me the maker of this strapped vase?  It's round, about 7 inches high and has a rough-ish pontil (that is to say you can feel where it has been broken off and although it is not sharp, it hasn't been totally flattened all round).  The colours are amber and light brown.  There are no identifying marks on the base (the sticker is just the dealer's label). It's on sale in my local antique shop and I thought before I buy it, I'd try to find out what make it is.  It reminds me of the Whitefriars strapped vases but I know it's not by Whitefriars.  I was wondering if it might be Dartington?  I've searched Google images but can't find anything like it, so am now turning to the experts on this forum!  :)

Hi, welcome to the board!

I think this is one of the vases that was made by the Gistl Glashütte in Germany in the 60s-70s, in various colours attached on clear glass. There were a number of shapes. Apart from brown I've seen them with turquois-green or with dark grey colours attached. For comparison I've attached my own Gistl vase, different shape, same technique, so you can see if yours is similar enough.

Hi Astrid

Thanks for your reply.  It does indeed look very similar to a Gistl vase.  After you suggested it might be Gistl, I did a search and came across this old post from the GMB - http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,35471.0.html.  Halfway down the page is a pic of a round Gistl vase which is very similar to mine, apart from the rim on mine is rounded (fire polished?) rather than ground.

I'm actually a Whitefriars collector but this vase caught my eye because it reminded me of WF random strapped vase and I liked it!
