Komaromy or Bimini?
« on: February 14, 2011, 10:15:15 AM »
Hi. This is my first post, so I'm optimistic!!
Did Bimini or Komaromy make figures in clear glass? Are the bases always the beautiful spheres or are they sometimes a more simple tripod?
Guess who has seen a clear glass figurine on a tripod-style base!!! Also, guess who didn't get a decent picture!!
Thanks

Hi and welcome to the board. We are fortunate to have an interesting topic on Komaromy with input from his daughter who is also a member here: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,23.0.html and an article in the Glass Encyclopedia here: http://www.glassencyclopedia.com/Komaromyglass.html

The Cambridge Glass Fair - on Sunday 27th February will include an exhibition (in the foyer) of work by Istvan Komaromy.   Details can be found at      www.cambridgeglassfair.com/
The website includes an excellent biography of the artist,  written by his daughter, Chris Burley.

You can also see the Pathe Newsreel film online by googling "Blow Pipe Art" . Several figurines can be seen in this short film.
Tripod bases were certainly used for some of the early figurines.  Also wooden, marble and alabaster bases. Other figures were free standing.
Examples of all these as well as the lovely dancers on mouth-blown globes will be included in the exhibition.

If you can manage to get to view the exhibition it will be sure it will help you identify these sculptures in future.

 for the base.  The most important characteristic now is that the one I have seen is in clear glass. Does that disqualify it?

No, if you read the links I posted above it tells you about the types of glass that Komaromy used.

Went back and it was still there :sun:. It isn't now :smg:!! Here are a couple of photos - full profile and three-quarters. Could it be?

Owen, my gut feeling is that it's not Komaromy - it doesn't seem to match his figures somehow. Are you in the UK? There are a fair few lampworkers about who made / make figures - I watched the Brighton glassman make some years ago, so pinning it down might be difficult.
