Finnish (?) Mod Pinched Circle Vase
« on: February 27, 2011, 02:48:31 PM »
I cannot make out the acid etched signature on this interesting vase.  Designwise the piece strikes me as Scandinavian.  Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Charles.

Definitely not Riihimäki, nor Finnish I believe.
It is very hard to read anything from the mark, I would say it would be best to try a good macro for a photo.

Can you get a better photo of the signature?

John

The signature does not look acid etched to me .  More like one by vibrator tool - they tend to be blurry.  Also there is a difficulty because you have taken it too "front on" so the shadow and the signature are intermingled and it is harder to try and decide what either one reads.  You can try to take a shot in sunlight so the shadow is separate from the signature - see my Christopher Wright example.  Another method is to take at a shallow angle so that light reflects from the smooth base but the engraved or etched signature shows as dark - see Eileen Gordon example.  A third method is to arrange a dark background so the signature appears light against it.  This can be achieved by a dark cloth inside the vase and the picture taken with bright light - see Webb etch marking example.

Hope we can get to see a better result and be able to help you.

These are by a trendy french designer, interiors company, flower arranger or something like that...as you can tell my memory is a bit fuzzy, but we had one a few years ago and have seen several others since...they are a contemporary outfit selling 'lifestyle' stuff, have a website and I think chain of stores.

I think the mark is sand blasted and if you can get a clearer/larger picture it might jog my memory.

Hi Charles, Just so that you know what has happened, I took Rihiimaki out of the subject line, because it's not, and it looked too much like one of our ID declarations and might have confused later readers. Will also move it to Glass for greater exposure.
