A vividly multicoloured Med. vase. with a blue base and unusual shape

Hello,

I've been meaning to sign up here for ages, I collect the miniature glass animals from the 60s and 70s.
I collect them for fun, and would like to find out more about them, and share my collection..

Today, I purchased this glass vase, because I've never seen anything quite like it before. It may originally have had a lid.  It seems to have some age to it, because it has surface scratches on the base
even though it shows in the photo as a black background its on a blue glass background
it has a strange texture, it's not smooth.

The lady I purchased it from, said it was her Mother IN Laws. She said she travelled in Europe a lot, I asked her if she ever went to the Mediterranean ?sp? because at a complete guess, from my little knowledge of my glass animals, id say that;s where it was from.

it has a few nibbles around the rim. it measures around 13cm tall.

I just wondered if anyone could tell me a little more about it.

I love the vivid colours, oranges, reds, blues and greens!

Almost certainly Bohemian/Czech, late 19th C through to 1930s. It probably had a metal grid for holding flowers rather than a lid. This is often called spatter glass and was made by many companies in different colours and shapes.

oh look at that :) thats almost exactly the same!

so, can anyone tell me how this would have been made. was it factory produced or handmade?
is it blown in to a mould? are the colours laid on top of the blue vase?

It was made by hand in a factory. A lot of glass was and is. A blue glass blob was hand blown into a bubble, then it was rolled in glass chips on a metal slab called a marver. Then it was reheated before hand blowing into a mould to form the final shape. The chips melt onto the surface but are not completely smoothed out. That's a bit of an "economy" description but near enough.

Nice example.... Czech/Bohemian for sure....  Great color combination.....
