uranium vaseline thingamaJig
« on: March 19, 2011, 11:45:29 AM »
just under 2.5" high, I've not got a clue what it was used for, the glass is very thick and reminds me of the early deception glasses, it has W3d etched on the rim... could be acid etched ,i wonder which way round  it used if it had any use?

cheers Ray

Ahhh right, that's a bit of a bummer then Ray! :)

Thinking aloud: I'm wondering if it might be a cover for an external lamp of some sort? You know, like the green and red ones on the sides of ships or planes. That might explain the thickness of the glass?

3am, just finished typing up some music scores, thought I'd look in here and ...

eBay description of Ray's oddity gives title of, "Glass dome paperweight" !!!!! :o

Has anybody ever seen a paperweight that looks like this? And one that would be used such that the etched letters / numbers are updside down?

I know I get a bit hot under the collar with all the birds and animals that get described as "paperweights", but this is the best yet. ::)

Somebody, please tell me its definitely not a paperweight. It can't be ... ???

Time for bed, I think.

Wrong colour green for a ships navigation light, I have only ever seen them in a dark green, that is almost fluorescent. Any uranium content?

Hi ,
here is a stab in the dark which may or may not be completely bonkers , I have seen similar coloured glasses from the early 20thc ,though they could stand on a flat ground base, and they were marked in the same way  to represent the contents and cost , ie (W)hisky 3D    3 old pence, i have also seen them marked for 1 and 2 old pennies W1d  W2d   ,maybe this is a coaching type variety ,handed to people in carriages or similar on a brief stop so no need for it to stand,I have also seen them marked with G presumably for gin and with the same 1, 2 and 3 p mark

cheers ,
            Peter.

I am betting that this is an upside-down shot glass.  McKee Glass made a 'bottoms up' shot glass that has a naked person bent over the top of the shot glass.  type in BOTTOMS UP SHOT GLASS on ebay.  I just got 26 different auctions.

Your uranium shot glass is heavy because it was most likely made to withstand the user to slam it down with gusto on the bar after he tossed back the shot in a single gulp.  Just one of those macho things you generally only see in the movie.  Personally, I think a dram of scotch should be sipped and savored!

If Dave and Peter are correct, might the people on this site be able to help you?
http://www.shotglass.org/index.html

I had no idea that the word shot in shot glasss was originally Schott from the glass company that made the glasses, hence the term 'A Shot of Whisky', which was originally 'A Schott of whiskey'.....you learn something new every day"" :ho:
