Smoke decanter
« on: April 03, 2011, 09:26:07 PM »
I bought this today thinking it was made by Dartington but as far as I can tell it was not. On reflection the colour is too green to be midnight.

So, after checking a few books and having a look around I am none the wiser. By chance I notice Fieldings have one in their upcoming auction and they seem a bit lost too, describing it as "Scandinavian" and "possibly Orrefors" (not quite what I would call cinnamon either >:D). At least they aimed a bit 'higher' than me. :D

As far as I can tell not Whitefriars, Dartington or Holmegaard, which at least is a start. Polished pontil mark and ten inches tall (25.5cm).

Thanks

John

I've not looked in my meagre books yet but have you ruled out Wedgwood?

hmm on page 78 of Andy McConnell's Millers 20th Century Glass there is an Erik Hoglund decanter with what looks to be a very similar stopper.  And it reminds me of the lid on Benny Motzfeldt cheese boards as well.  Maybe that is where the Scandinavian link comes in?  I'm not saying it is either of those though.
I'll keep looking.

Those stoppers are remarkably similar but sadly that is where the similarities end. You must have the eyes of an eagle to have spotted that though M. ;D

Not Wedwood as far as I can tell (not far, Susan Tobin's book is one of several on my to buy list).

Definitely! :hiclp:

I looked through 20th Century Glass by Mr McConnel earlier too, I had my blinkers on, nothing like a preconceived idea to lead you astray.

Thanks Michelle.
