Although it wasn't exactly cheap, I couldn't resist this gorgeous vase. The body is in green glass overlaid with a blown-out crackle type pattern. The decor looks silvery white from a distance but on close inspection it appears to consist of very fine bubbles and possibly some kind of white powder. The vase has been cased in clear and has a ground and polished pontil mark to the base.

I'm hoping someone can help ID it. I suspect it might be Loetz Schaumglas - certainly the seller was offering other pieces of Loetz and Kralik, so early 20th century Bohemian seems reasonably likely.

Thanks,

Steven :)

 Absolutely lovely Stephen, I'd have bought  :hiclp:  No Idea of origin, but most unusual technique.  Does anyone know if this would have been a frit + chemical reaction process.....  :ooh: OK I don't know what I'm talking about but do want to learn!!!  :hi:  cheers steph.

Hi Steph,

I'm not exactly sure how this effect was created, though it appears that a green gather was blown, then trailed with the foamy/ bubbly glass, the whole then being cased in clear. The bubbles presumably were created by the addition of chemicals to the batch, but I'm not sure what. There's some mention of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide being part of the process in this thread: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,5797.0.html (the translated quote from Wikipedia).

I've been trying to find out more about Schaumglas but there doesn't seem to be much information available. I'm still leaning towards a possible Loetz attribution for this vase, but would welcome a second opinion. There seem to be some technical similarities (cased foamy trails and a hot worked rim) with this vase previously identified as Loetz: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,4550.0.html

Just giving this a bump as it's been nearly a year since I got this vase and I still don't have a positive ID  :(

Thanks,
Steven :)

Steven is the trailing bubbles or white bits?
Craig posted a pic of a piece that has white bits in and it reminded me of that

I've got a yellow vase with exactly the same effect - it's WMF.
Haven't got a pic to hand - and it's packed away in the attic.

I've tracked down a lousy, out of focus image and recaptured it from photobucket.
You'll just have to believe me, the effect is exactly the same!
I've also just remembered, I've got an egg shaped WMF vase with this effect too!

It's clear, covered in this - it looks like a snow covered forest - and it was originally lined with silver - although that has become very damaged. Again, it's packed away - and I don't have any pics hidden away.

I really think your vase has a sort of typical WMF sort of foot, I just don't know about this shape - but I'm no WMF specialist!

Hi m, yes I do see that the white decor looks a little similar to Craig's piece from a distance, however, my vase is definitely bubbly and looks quite different up close.

Thanks Sue, your vase certainly looks to use an identical technique so WMF seems very likely :) I like your description of it looking like a snow covered forest, I think that captures the effect perfectly!

What's the base like on your yellow vase? The only reason I ask is that the known WMF pieces I've handled have all had a slightly different foot treatment, i.e. a ground foot in addition to the ground out & polished pontil mark. My green vase has a nicely ground out and polished pontil mark, but no grinding to the edge of the foot. That said, my knowledge of WMF is quite limited, and if your piece has a similarly finished foot, then I'm happy with a tentative WMF attribution  ;)

Thanks,
Steven

A very typical moulded base, I think..... or a round polished pontil mark. It's right for WMF vases in this style!  ::)
Sorry I can't get my mitts on it to check!

I think the best way forward would be to find out if WMF made vases in this fan shape.
The white stuff on my yellow vase is EXACTLY the same as that on your green one.

Well there isn't much that is identical to the one I've linked to but it does have a crimped rim  :)
top left 1948 in yellow with orange spatter - if you click on the pic it enlarges and you can see the rim.
