Mdina Bowl - Info Required........ Sue..?
« on: April 28, 2011, 04:53:36 PM »
Hi all,

Picked up this piece of Mdina today which caught my eye. Just interested in finding out a little more about this particular design.

My thoughts were post Harris around late 70s ish....? not sure how common this particular design is?

Weighs 1.2kg, around 3.5 inches high and 5 inches wide.

All thoughts appreciated.

Greg :)

I'm not exactly positive, Greg - I would say '70s, perhaps even including the early part for some of the bowls/ashtrays in this sort of style. They're not scarce, but they are rather gorgeous and quite complex - there's crizzling in silver chloride in the base clear glass, and lots of interest with the colours and textures of strapping outside, giving them a chunky sculptural quality. This sort of strapping was put around the knops of the chalices during Michael Harris' time, it's certainly a technique and design he was responsible for introducing at Mdina - as was the crizzle bit.

I like these beasts. I have a few in various shapes and sizes and colourways, but I do like the bluey ones the best.
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Thanks for your thoughts Sue much appreciated.

Funnily enough I was comparing the strapping on the Chalices earlier, I thought they drew a strong resemblance.

I didn't think that they were going to be particularly scarce, although as you say they do seem fairly complex.  I do like the design and colour, they seem like quite a good buy for the money.

Thanks again.

Greg
