Hi All,

Hoping someone can help with trying to identify the signature on this Mdina Chalice.

Signed 'Mdina Glass 1975'  followed by a signature, all in script.

Appreciate the form/shape of the chalice is later in date than the more tapered bowls on the earlier chalices.

Wondering if the signature was Eric Dobson's or possibly Joseph Said, I gather that many other employees also signed their work. However would be interested to hear your thoughts.....

Hope the pic of the signature is clear enough, really tricky trying to pic up with the camera, best of several takes!

Much appreciated.

Greg

Unfortunately, there's a reflection on an important bit of the squiggle - could you try again, perhaps with a bit of talc to show the shape of the squiggle up better?

Have you seen many early chalices, Greg? I have about 5, but I have noticed since Mark's book was published, the early ones have only been significant by their absence.  :spls:

Hi Sue,

Couple of new pictures of the signature attached. One of the shots is clearer, however the other still has the reflection, although I managed to move the reflection away from the beginning of the signature. Hope this helps, if you need any other shots just let me know and I'll try a few others.

I've seen a handful of earlier chalices around for sale, although not online and they have been on the expensive side of expensive! - They do seem to have become rather thin on the ground.

Thanks,
Greg

 :thud:

It starts a bit like Said's squiggle, but looks a bit longer than usual. Dobson's writing is quite spikey.

Yours looks like a 'fuzzier' version of this one Greg:-

May be my imagination, because im always confused with anything but Michaels signature,
but i think it looks like it could end in Dobson? maybe its Eric Dobson?

Thanks Rosie and Andy.

When I first looked at the signature my first thoughts were that it looked like 'Dobson', although I'm not that familiar with his signature to be honest....

Here are two images - one of a confirmed Eric Dobson signature, the other, a confirmed Joseph Said signature.

thanks for the comparisons Sue. I see what you mean, in comparison it does look closer to Joseph Said signature, albeit a little longer....looks like a lazy Said signature or another employee altogether then.... :-\
