Green vase (American) with frilly top
« on: July 15, 2011, 02:32:48 PM »
Here is a vase I bought in the States many years ago, and it was second hand then.  It is 7" tall and about 4.5" at its widest.  It's a very nice pale-ish green and quite thin glass.  I'm afraid I don't know what you call the wavy lines coming up from the base.  These are on the inside (indented).  Any suggestions as to possible age (at very least 15 years old) or maker would be great.  Thanks!
Nancy

Reverse optic perhaps  ;)

I can think of two ways that was done...

Ribbed plunger for machine blown.

Hand blown, dip mould then blown and attach punty iron as normal, open bubble to disc, attach second punty to other side smooth down first punty scar and then shape as normal with ribs on the inside.

Needs a glass-blowers insight...

The rim crimping might suggest Anchor Hocking.

Thanks to you both.  Kevin's suggestion has had me looking at hundreds of Anchor Hocking items, and indeed there are some similarities.  I have found frilled rim pieces and pieces with the internal 'ribbing' but none with both and none in the same shape.  Will persevere though.  I am also looking at Owens-Illinois (discovered while looking for AH).

Can anyone recommend a good US glass forum?

Gosh!  That would be nice.  Another avenue to explore!  Thanks Max.

@Frank.  I've just realised that you gave me the term for the 'ribbed' look of my vase - reverse optic.  Thanks!

Just a quick update.  I contact the DG forum that Christine suggested and again someone suggested it might be Anchor Hocking.  Having now looked at trillions (yes, literally!) of pics of AH vases I'm not convinced as I haven't come across any with the same shape.  Gonna have a good look at Empoli now!

At least in the US, optics with the pattern on the inside are common - no need to call it reverse optic.  The bubble is blown in a ribbed dip mold which forms a pattern of thinner and thicker areas, then in a smooth-sided mold, so the ribs are transferred to the inside.
