Today's Charity Shop Purchase - Mdina Glass - 1
« on: July 25, 2011, 12:29:31 PM »
Hi All,

Today I am now boarding on being bankrupt, however, am consoling myself with these truly magnificent pieces of Mdina that I came across in a charity shop today.

The first is an absolutely massive Mdina Sculpture which is around 15 inches tall, and I would approximate around the 20lb in weight mark. Signed the base with what I believe is Eric Dobson's signature and dated 1973.

Please enjoy, these have made my year!

Greg

Hi Cathy,

They do look a little like intestines! especially when the light shines through showing the internal detail. I think their freehand sculptures, quite often their mistakenly described as knots. I had a few of the smaller sculptures before, which are much later in date, I gather that these were predominately sold as souvenirs. The large ones are generally earlier, this ones a beast, weighing around the 20lb mark, problem is that's its too heavy for any of my shelves! Although does look great near the window with the light shinning through.

Thanks Ross, right place, right time, I think that they had just come in. On seeing them I just had to buy them, and paid market price (and now am having to let go of a few other pieces to help finance, but on balance I could not leave the shop without them.)

I especially liked the fact that they were both signed by Dobson and both produced in 1973.
