request for maker for chick salt.
« on: August 13, 2011, 09:59:18 AM »
First time I have found one of these 'chick salts', and I automatically looked at some information that I had from Anne (mod.), which gives details of Vallerysthall/Portieux pieces, also some data on Boyd, Degenhart and Westmorland.   I thought this would be Vallerysthall - but now don't think so, despite the base pattern of concentric cirlcles looking similar.   The positioning of the erect tail feathers, and more importantly the fact the the profile of the inside line of my tail is concave, whereas all others seem to be slightly the opposite - seems a bit academic, but just feel there is a noticable difference.   Modelling is quite crisp and detailed.   Base measurements on mine are 2.25" long  x  1.5" wide, and unfortunately can't see any wear.      Almost nothing in the British produced books that I can find, aside from a single image of a C19 example in Jenny Thompson's supplement.     I understand these things are/were still being produced in Japan (is that correct?).      May well be impossible to run down, but any ideas welcome, and thanks for looking. :)

 :spls:

Are these not referred to as "Hons" Paul - hens on nests, rather than "chicks"?
(but that's all I know about them.  :pb: )

Boyd is generally marked I think and I would say that slightly yellowish glass puts it before 1978 and not modern Japanese..

Is it at all possible that the top and bottom pieces are from 2 different chick salts?

thanks for all replies :)
1).......yes, you correct Sue, and they are also referred to as 'Hons'  -  and I'm unsure now as to quite what the correct terminology should be  -  does it depend on size??   Some of these things get to be quite large I understand.
2).......I haven't yet tried Boyd Rosie, as believe Christine is correct, and my sources also say that pieces from that factory should be marked.     However, I may try Boyd.
3).......Have looked again at the glass, and regret that in the flesh it doesn't appear yellowish, so apologies and maybe my camera work at fault.    It has a general white clearness.
4).......No reason to think the top and bottom are mis-matched Rosie. :)

Identical one on ebay here, same base + top, so I guess that confirms they match:

It seems everyone made these and there is no way to positively identify them. Largest maker was Von Streit - but could a be recent Taiwanese.

my thanks to everyone for their input -  and for now I will file in the 'awaiting identification" department. :)
