Help Identifying Swirl Art Glass
« on: September 06, 2011, 09:39:20 PM »
This is an extremely large heavy swirl design art glass vase shaped like a bowling pin. The outside looks like it was never finished off with a polishing, it is just slightly dull, the insider perfect, no dullness. Does anyone have any ideas about the maker of this item? It is about 13.5 inches tall. It is unmarked.  :help:

Thank you
Kathy

It's completely new to me and sorry to say it does look a bit rough (slightly wonky neck, unpolished base and wobbly spiral).

It's generally never good to see an unpolished base.  If this vase isn't Czech (which I suspect it isn't), it's emulating a Czech design with the looping, rust coloured spiral.  The Chinese have also copied this recently in vases.  I can't remember the Czech designer...there are paperweights as well as vases with the same rust coloured spiral too.  Hopefully it'll jog someone's memory here.  Have to say though, the Czech ones are incredibly well excuted, really impressively made with no mistakes, wobbly bits or unfinished parts.

It's the one and only pattern I recognise and can name in Czech Glass, Max.  :24:

As Czech glass is the only area I know a little of, I have to be pedantic here ;D

Sue is right about Beranek / Skrdlovice if we talk about the glasswork; but the designer of the pieces with internal spiral decoration was Stanislav Libensky, 1977. (Milena Vesliskova designed a vase for Skrdlovice with internal blue spiral in the 1950s already)
