Topic: Whitefriars M2 jug or not?

This is another new find, which looks like the M2 jug in the 1940 W/f catalogue, but the catalogue drawings are quite feint so I'm not sure if it is the same or not. Could anyone confirm for me please? Many thanks.

Hmm... I would be inclined to say no as the ribbing and handle looks a bit wrong. However, they were made in three different sizes so that may account for that.

Only other thing was the colour. If it is Whitefriars it will be Golden Amber but in the photo it looks a bit brown. Could just be the photo though.

The problem with this kind of jug is that all the manufacturers from this time made similar jugs. Unless it is a really distinctive design it is hard to tell.

David, I think it is slightly more brown than gold. So, probably not an M2 then. No worries, it's still a nice jug. Thanks for your help once again.

I bought an M2 in Sea Green yesterday, so here it is for comparison. It appears to have a different shape, especially about the base rim and handle, and seems to have more ribs than yours (mine has 15). It's 145mm tall and 135mm in diameter, excl. handle.

looks a good jug whatever Anne.      If I might put two penn'th in from a complete non expert  -  the outline of the handle shapes seem to be noticeably different.   On the green example the curve of the handle is very symmetrical  -  on yours it seems slightly less so, almost with change of the curve about two thirds down.    However, cud just be the perspective and my eyes.          Cheers              Paul S.

Thanks Nic, that's most helpful.  Comparing the two I'd say mine's not an M2. Paul thanks, you're right, the handle is quite different - so this one's still a mystery one.

something else from yesterday, is the pic. attached, which I'm hoping might actually be the Whitefriars M2 jug.      I have tried to count the ribs, but its not easy, and I think I made it either 18 or 19.    Height is 165 cms.   -   width across the top is 110 cms.        Pontil is nicely polished out, and the piece gives the most wonderful ring.
The handle is symmetrically curved without any change in shape, but my reservation is that the top of the handle does start slightly further down than the sea green example shown by Pinkspoons.    think the colour is o.k. tho. , apolgies that the pics. are slightly fuzzy (must have been the can of Special Brew I had with dinner)    thanks for looking and grateful for any replies.          Cheers         Paul S.

It was made in Golden Amber, although the colour of yours looks a little too yellow on my monitor - so I'm not sure. The only reason I can pin mine down as definitely Whitefriars, rather than from one of the many other companies producing variations on this theme, is an exact colour match with other Sea Green items I own.

 Here is the entry in the factory Design Book of 1933 designed by James Hogan ..................  Note that it was available in Sky Blue.
