Walther Glass Fische/Nymphen Comport Question
« on: November 05, 2011, 07:56:00 AM »
In the Walther 1934 catalogue there is a picture of a "Fische" comport; with a mermaid (Nymphen?) base, one arm up, one down, and a different base to the trinket set candlesticks.

My question is - does the comport base have a top the same as the candlesticks; and if so how does it fit the bowl, or is the bowl meant to have a peg base like other 2 piece comports do. Doing a search here I found a post about this from Pamela some years back, who said something about a "cork" I am not sure what she meant. Someone else told me that the base has a round flat top that fits in the base of the bowl.

Can anyone throw any light on this for me?

Many thanks
Auliya

Hi Auliya

I enclosed a photo of my 2 nymphen candlesticks with one arm up and the other one down. The "top" of the blue candlestick is wider than the pink one. Walther also made similar candlesticks without the top, which I believe were part of the dressing table sets.

Various fische bowls are also been made. The one with the ring in the centre is made for the Moven centrepiece or the Arabella as seen in the 1934? catalogue. The version without the ring in the centre is made to fit on top of this nymphen candlestick as therefore called fische comport as per catalogue. I've yet to see a peg / cork on this fische comport so far. Hope Pamela, Nige and other Walther collectors can confirm.

Cheers
Brenton

Ahh! Thanks Brenton! the one I have here with one arm up and one down seems to be definitely a candlestick then, not a comport base. I wondered if there was some sort of fitting/adaptor that could be used with the bowl and the candlestick topped Nymphen figure, but clearly there are specifically made bases for the comport.
