British Glass 1800-1914 or 20th Century British Glass, both by Charles Hajdamach, depending on what you collect are a good start ;D ;D

I couldn't live without the Leslie Pina books myself - Italian Glass Century 20, Scandinavian Glass Fire & Sea, Scandinavian Glass Smoke & Ice.  They can be a bit pricey, but are worth every penny in my opinion.  If you sell glass on ebay at all, they will pay for themselves many times over.

I recommend a slightly different gift.   A year's subscription to the Glass Association together with back numbers of all their in print journals.   You can check out books in print at Broadfield House, and almost all books on interlibrary loan here in the UK for a fairly nominal fee (now £3.00 from our local library), and decide which are really useful for you for day to day reference.   By next birthday or Christmas you can present your family with a prioritised list that guarantees no disappointment.

Also borrowing books on interlibrary loan helps glass book sales and rewards glass authors and glass book publishers, so is a good thing.
